A heat cut edge (hot knife/laser) can follow more intriquate bends/curves than a merowed edge can.  Heat cut can be of practically any width.  Merrowed edges are about 1/8" wide and are commonly used on simple round or rectangular patches or those with simple, gentle curves.  All holes or openings inside of a patch design have a heat cut edge.
